Has anybody managed to change a Series3 power steering rack without removing the gearbox? Would it be possible to just lower the engine and 'box slightly, as a unit, to give clearance?

Hi,

When I had my rack overhauled, I remember the machanic to have taken out the right strut and have the suspension hanging somehow.

This gave him some space in order to remove it and take it out of the car.

However I have seen other mechanics to have dropped slightly the engine along with the gearbox which also this gives a little more space.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Thanks chaps, I reckoned there must be someway of manouvering it out without taking the gearbox completely off! It's actually a LHD car just outside Amsterdam - should perhaps pop over for a couple of days to lend a hand...
