Dear guys, like to get a bench mark of performance. Anyone care to share top speeds tried? _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

I think the best i have got out of my old 1.7 ie 33 was around 198 - 200kmh, depenant on how accurate it is.
It sat at that speed for a while. didn't have enough power to go any further.
not bad for a car that age and engine that size.
considering the quickest i had my old bike was 289kmh before i ran out of road! _________________ Molto Veloce! |

Hi,
I used to get 200km/h out of my 1989 33 1.3s... It flew, strictly original, and it was able to mantain that speed uphill... loved that car to bits
On my 33 16v I nearly got to 220Km/h, and she still had the power to go further... but there was traffic aproaching, so better safe than sorry...
drive safe
All the best

Hi
Never really pushed the P4 that hard on top speed. The little 1.3 series 3 carbed car managed 193kmh on the clocks

hi
My series 2 33 1.3s was pure magic, what a lovely car... oh, you can´t wonder how much I miss it...
Now my 92' 33 16v is somewhat of a beast... at nearly 220 km/h it must have nearly been around 6500rpm (I think it has a rev limit at 6700rpm - not sure because I never touch it ). Anyway I don't mantain it up at that kind of speeds any more than a few seconds... (just touch and drop... ).
All the Best

on my 1.7 8v managed to get 110mph but i think i was about 5000-5000rpm so plenty more to come..
on the 1.4ie i got about 180kmph..
on the 1.5 (double weber! what a sound...) _my father's_ sadly i never drove it (for some apparent reason he was hesitating to give it to me).. |

I'll be damnned. Never expected the smaller cc's to hit that sort of speeds. _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

I suppose so anyway it did that biting the red-line... (about 50-100 rpm inside)
It was very fast, but it also drank alot some-times I think it nearly got near to 20 l /100km... (young nut driving about on twisty isolated roads) with about 10 l of fuel I nearly ran out of gas to get to school that was about 45km away...
Unbelievable was that little motor could fly away from my friends VW polo G40 from 120 to about 160 km/h on the motorway, both in 5th gear... he would be left behind about 4-5 cars... after that he would catch up
god, how I miss those two double webbers...
All the best

I have had 135 mph on the clock out of my 3316v. But it will only be done once. its been done now so i can rest happily at night. was fairly hairy at that speed though. was trying to bounce it off the limiter but the car was rattling so i backed off. Dunno if this is the true indication of the top speed. I would say i was going more like 130mph. But she could have gone faster i feel. It just didnt feel right _________________ Charlie

my 33 16v was pretty stable at +/-220 km/h (on the clock), and didn't rattle at all... the problem that pops up in my head at that kind of speeds is HOW THE HELL AM I GOING TO STOP WITH THESE KIND OF BRAKES???
the car has ABS and discs all round but they just don't seem strong... (not like the 156 1.6 twinspark sportpack 3 that I drove last week... )...
thinking about the brakes... I'm getting pretty worried about the MOT (next august)... last year a had a lot of trouble getting the car passed... it only passed after the rear biase valve (along all mounting accessories), master cylinder, and one rear caliper were changed, and even then it got aprox. 65 % efficiency at front and 44 % at rear = overal 55%!! Is this normal?
Any tips?
All the best

I've calculated the theoretical topspeeds of the series 3 cars. Obvioussly these don't include air resistance or road friction. Anyway, if any of you guys manage to top these speeds, your speedo isn't telling the truth!
Alfa 33 topspeeds Calculated theoretical Official
1.3 IEL 182km/h@6200 178 km/h
1.5 IEL 192km/h@6200 181 km/h
1,7 IEL 196km/h@6000 190 km/h
1,7 16V 204km/h@6500 205 km/h |

Hi,
of course your calculations INCLUDE all kind of frictions. Without that you would calculate that your car can go infinitely fast If you reach a top speed in 5th gear at for example 6200rpm, then there is an equilibrium between engine power and air resistance, etc. Then from the gear ratios and wheel diameter you can calculate the speed, and that's what you did, I assume.
Cheers

That's what I did, it's just that I'm not sure where that equilibrium point is!
I was assuming that the cars 'run out of gears', and that they are running at full rpm. In real life it may be the case that the cars won't actually reach the rev limiter as the air resistance is too great. For example, the 1.3 may have its redline at 6200 rpm, but it's topspeed is reached at about 6000. If the 33 had a better cw value, its topspeeds would be closer to the theoretical topspeeds as the air resistance would be less. Tell you what though, the only way to top these speeds would be to find a speed hill
Cheers,
Paddy |

Hi
All the series 3 33's had the same gearing except the 1.3 models. Also some cars will go into the red line. The rev limiter on my old series 2 1.7 carbed car was at 6800rpm I think.
All the best

I took the different final drives and tire sizes into consideration. If the redline was at 6800 though...that would be fast as I calculated at 6000 rpm for the 1.7! Speed at 6800 rpm in top gear for a 1.7 = 222km/h!

Hi
On the 1.7 the red line was at 6200, but the rev limiter was at 6800. I managed to get an indicated 118mph out of it (think the road test was 116mph)
All the best

in my 145 QV i have bounced of the rev limiter and the speedo is saying that im doing 147mhp this is on a slight down hill but p the hill i can do 138mhp. This seems to be very quick as the book time is 130mhp. So Paddy can you work out what you say my car can do top end. It would be nice to see the difference. My rev limiter is set to 7200rpm (if this helps)
Thanks
James _________________ Umm thinking of getting a Alfa 33 P4 16v cloverleaf.
I would have done but i could not see any nice ones, so on the end i went for a 145 QV. Very happy with it
But still looking for a nice cheep 33 cloverleaf. |

I calculated it, although I was expecting a higher value:
5th gear ratio = 0.94
Diff = 3.6
Tyres: 195/55R15
Max RPM = 7200rpm
Top speed = 214 km/h - 133 mph
The book top speed of 130 mph should be reached at 7065 rpm. |

It's a big difference, perhaps the values I used for the ratio's are wrong... |

In your calculations you ales use the original aloy/tyre size...
When I recalculate it for my 16v settup with 15" aloys it could go up to 219 km/h @ 6700 rpm but with the squadra chip i can go up to 7200 that would mean I can reach 231 km/h downhill _________________ Registro Trentatre: http://www.alfaromeo33.nl

That is fast! Concerning the wheels, I wouldn't have thought that the size would make that much difference as the overal diameter should remain about the same - we also have 195/50's R15. The bigger the wheel, the lower the profile, overal diameter shouldn't change by more than 2% (if I'm not mistaken). The speedo will also give false readings if the wrong size tires are fitted. The only problem is that there aren't any hills over here in Holland except for the A2 going into Maastricht!! Would look cool seeing the needle aproaching the 240 line!
Van mij mag je het proberen, maar ik weet niet hoe goed het voor de motor zou zijn....zou wel een record zijn voor een 33 denk ik! |
