Dear Alfistas hello again,
My road lighting conditions although could be discribed as respectable, I do feel like they need to be improved a bit.
Based on a previous article people were discussing that the headlights of the 33 can accumulate water that eats away the silver coating of the inner side of the headlights. Thus what was recommended was to either replace the headlights or de-assemble them and give a good rubbing and scrabing of the silver finish of the lights.
As my headlights are not broken and in general they do not need replacement although I do have a few spots of faded silver coating at the fron side of the headlights, my question is how to improve the car's lighting.
Stronger headbulbs (I think that it has 55-60W) or an electric booster cirquit to enhance the lighting?
Thanks in advance

Hi, you can use headlightbulbs of newer type, that should give you a bit of extra light while using same power.
Osram Bilux(Philips Vision)should give you 30% more light
Osram Silverstar(Philips Vision Plus) should give you 50% more light
compared to original H4, at 55w60. But it comes with price of more expencive bulb and since lighining string is thinner, they last less then usual H4.
Those 50%+ give you very white light, not as bright as 80w100 H4, but close. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Hi,
A pal from Alfaclub gave me a set of small 5W bulbs for the headlights intended for the low scale lights. These are regular bulbs, blue colored and indeed the light emmiting is truly white instead of bright yellow of the standard ones.
The 60/55W set costs however around 40€ which I think worths it.
So, when time comes that one of the bulb burns out, it is a great opportunity to have them replaced with the Philips ones.

Hi all...
A friend of mine, bought a xenon kit...
He fitted it to his Skoda Octavia. Only problem is that, the Skoda uses 2 different lamps for high beam and driving lights.
When using driving lights, the xenon bulbs really make a HUGE difference...
But when he turns the high beam...The lighs seem yellow and weaker than the driving lights...
The kit was very simple to install. He specified the type of lamp that he intended to replace, and the kit plugs simply on the socket that fits on the lamp...Only had to make 2 supports to hold the 2 "black boxes".
I was considering to install a similar kit to my car, but never did for 3 reasons:
1-In Portugal, to be legal to use the xenon lights, you have to install headlight washers (the P4 had them, but it was never sold in my country).
2-Dont know if the H4 kit covers high beam/driving lights. (or if it exists a H4 Kit).
3-The cost is very high. Altough the kit is easy fit, his cost, is very high.
(my friend paid 400/450€ by his kit).
However is the best option to upgrade your lights...When its raining, on dark areas, the road sometimes, seems to have no marks at all...
No more that with xenon lights. They really work...(on a Skoda).
All the best

Hello again,
So if I am not mistaken according to Ben_nz the wire-looming for the front fog-lights it does exist isn't it???
1. So does it worth while installing the Alfa's original fog-lights?
2. If I do not use the Alfa fog lights, as according to my mechanic cost around 120 euros the pair, what spec after-market fog-lights can the original wiring feed???
3. I know that you Ben_nz went for twin driving lights. Does anyone else went for some kind of driving lights instead of fog-lights???
Thanks in advance _________________ 1994 Alfa 33 1.5 IE Cat. 220.000Kms and still going strong!!! (Από την Αθήνα και τώρα στην Λευκωσία) |

Hi...
Yes, the wiring for the fog lights is alredy in place. You will need also the dashboard switch, and a relay...(socket is on engine bulkhead, near the brake servo).
The original Alfa fogs, are a little help, but not that much...
As for after-market, i really dont know, what projectors will fit in the original plug...
If you fit driving lamps, however you will not be using the fog lights wiring.
You will have to wire it up, to yours High beam . You can use a switch to disconnect them (and only use the car High beam), or if really needed turn them on and when pulling the collumn stalk having the car light up the main headlights, and the auxiliary lamps...
However, take a look at your country laws. It might be illegal to wire the projectors this way. (and i really dont know if this is possible even in my country)
All the best

4 reasons?
I dont know if the original lights support the greater heat a xenon lamp produces.
Wouldnt it melt the reflective plate inside, and the plastic casing? _________________ Carpe diem!!

If I could work out how to put pictures on this site I would post a couple of my old black 1.7 with foglights and spotlights which were BRILLIANT. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

Hi Baiones
Xenon lights, are actually cooler than the standard items. Thats why the headlights need washers...
In the winter time, condensation forms itself on the headlights. On standard items, the heat generated by them is enough to clear the condensation.
The xenons are cooler so they are not up to the task of clearing the condensation....
All the best

Thanks guys for your replies
what i am going to do then given the right opportunity i will try to locate the brighter bulbs and i will come back with some feedback on them.
About the fog-lights i am not so sure right now although here in Cyprus in can be really humid and foggy even in the summer.
Finally there is something else i will like to ask you all. The headlights can be adjusted in height by two plastic screws that are set for a 1. high, 2. medium and 3. low position. On the co-driver's side is set at the 1. high position in order to be able to see on the pedestrian side of the road. What about the drivers side though. Mine is set at the 3. low position?
That's for now

Hi...
Sorry for not replying sonner....
The plastic adjusters, on the headlights, should be BOTH in the same position....
The purpose of this adjusters, is to adjust your car headlights, under load...
With the car unloaded, they should be set at the highest position, and as you load up your car, they should be set toghether, at consecutive lowest positions...
Cars that have height adjustment on the dashboard (Later 33 also have those), adjust ALWAYS BOTH headlights... Except if something is broken
Hope this helps
