Hi,

Does anyone know of where I can obtain some big end and mains bearing shells for a 1.7 engine. Alfa do them through the parts system, but as always they are an arm and a leg prices.

Could you let me know if you have a set or know where I could get some at a sensible price.

what sizes do you need, I have a couple of sets but can't remember what sizes they are.

Thanks Keith,

What do you have to know when it come to asking for some? Are they size or colour coded for different applications. Did you fit them yourself and if so was it straight forward?

Hi

Alfa ones are coded, some of the aftermarket ones are not. Big end bearings are easy enough to fit (I did it in a pit, engine in the car).

Hugh,

Not quite sure about differences,

The ones from the car which crank I have pinched have:

135576 <CL> 154 OK stamped on the larger block bearing and

134291 <CL> 154 OH on the big end / smaller bearings.

I don't know if these numbers refer to the bearings or are possibly manufactures numbers??? I seem to remember that some bearings are marked with blue or red (as Keith makes mention of) felt tip for close tolerance??, but again not sure. I am pretty sure this engine that provided doner parts was totally standard - so am looking for a set of main and big end bearings to fit a standard car. It is effectively a 1.7 16v if that helps.

Would you need any more information than that?

hi Edward,

I've got a set of mains that will do you, they're not genuine Alfa ones but are AE glacier (good quality). Haven't got any big ends that size.

I take it that these are for a track car? if so I would get a set of narrowed Alfa Nord big end bearings from AHmotorsports. Not cheap but will take more abuse than the standard ones.

If you just want ordinary ones phone Alfashop.

I'll swap you the bearings for your axle! Seriously I don't know what they cost make me an offer if you want them.

Do you want to make me an offer for the back axle bearing in mind what I paid for it in the first place and travelling all the way from Bristol to Cambridge to go and get it.

These are the shells that came out of my P4. They had started to make a noise that you could just about hear at ~3000rpm.

Keith,

Good photo - it is clear to see the wear on those ones. I know you were saying that you only changed the big ends, did that sort things out?

Was there any resultant damage to the crank?

When fitting them, the new ones that is, did you use special lube as you put the new ones in.

Is refitting them fairly straight forward?

Hi

You can see the wear, but you couldn't feel it with you fingers or finger nails. No visable damage to the crank, and nothing you could feel either.

I just put a load of oil on them.

Quite easy to fit if you have a pit or a lift. Longest bit of the job is tightening up the bolts that hold the sump pan on.

Edward, I had a look at the workshop manual after we spoke this evening and it is only the big end bearings that have 2 different "standard" sizes. The mains are all the same thickness, so the ones I have will do you fine.
