Hi,
Can I skimmed the cylinder head in order to gain the compression ratio hence more power?. If can, could someone advice me how much I can safely skim?. |

In some 8 valve engines most of the combustion chamber is in the piston, not the head, so just like the old Ford Crossflow engine, there isn't much point in skimming the head - you would be better to skim the block instead.
I have also heard that the blocks aren't always exactly equal either side about the crank - meaning one pair of cylinders might get more compression anyway, so it's at least a good idea to have the blocked checked and skimmed to equalise each side if you are getting the engine rebuilt.... even if you aren't wanting to raise the compression by much.

Thanks for your reply. BTW, mine is 1.7 16V. How much I can possibly skim without having valve hitting the piston crown?. Anyone did this before? 0.5mm maybe? |

If the cams are properly aligned, then the crowns won't hit any valves.
As Alex says, the block facings can be misaligned a bit, so what is taken off the block will depend on what is required to balance the two sides. SO one side may lose 0.2 mm and the other may lose 0.29 mm. _________________ Chris Notsis |
