After a cold and damp winter, I removed nearly all the mayo in the oil filler neck and recycle pipes.
The mayo is "normal", after tests it appears I have no head coolant leaks etc etc. So spoke my trusted mechanic (with 25 years a-r experience).
What I am wondering is, given that this mayo and associated gases
gets recycled into the manifold (16V engine), is there an advantage in
blocking that pipe into the manifold and fitting a crankcase breather filter
on the Oil Filler Neck outlet?
These filters cost about £15 (eg K&N/Green/Pipercross)
Any one tried?
Any opinions?

Persoanlly I wouldnt. There doesnt seem to be any great advantage as the small filter is likely to get blocked just as easily, plus the single filter is likely to be more messy.

As long as I clean out the breather system occasionally then I have not had a problem with them (and by occasionally I mean less often than every oil change)

You shouldn't be getting mayo at all, the only time you would expect it on a healthy engine is if it has been sat unused for a long time and then run. But a trip of 20+ miles would remove it ALL.

Try sticking some rad-weld or similar in the coolant, this will block any mico leaks you may have in the head gasket. I have had similar on an Sud and it sorted it (had mayo but compession as tight as a ducks arse at forty fathoms after treatment, no mayo)

I finally managed to get the oil vapour filter off the neck filler
And found Oil Sludge - lots of it
- looks like it has been there for a long time
and had blocked the vapur flame trap
Cleaned it all out, and the crankcase now breathes properly
IE Hard to pull the Oil Cap off when the engine is running
Doing so affects the engine tick-over, which it did not do before
Need to run it until the end of the week to see if mayo problem gone.
It will now need new oil & filter.
Do not like using the coolant leak stuff - it will block the heater core

Just how common is the formation of 'mayonnaise' in 33s - and which engines suffer most?
When I had a new P4 I had to clean the oil filler neck and filter regularly. As far as I know it didn't have a dodgy head gasket....but who knows; they do say it's far better to be the second owner of an Alfa - after the first one has got rid of the 'teething problems'.
