All,

Confused! Confused

Crank at top dead centre... and it's supposed to be like this :

But they're like this :

AGH! It appears the right hand bank are aligned correctly - but the left aren't. Also - the left have markings 45 degrees apart instead of 130 ish!?!?!?

What's going on here?!

(and who says people who are into cars can't draw? Laughing )

Bob

If I understand it correctly only one bank of cams will line up per rotation as they go round at half(?) engine speed.
Therefore if you rotate the engine one complete revolution again so that T is in the dissy window the left hand bank should have the T's lined up. Repeat again and the right hand bank T's will line up, I hope.
Hope this helps.

I understand the half engine speed thing... but I thought the T in the dizzy window meant all the T's on the cam wheels lined up, either all apart or all together.

I think one bank are 180 out... and that the markings on the left bank are incorrect?!?!?!

At least... that's what I think at the moment! Wink

show us a piccy - the 2 lines on the top pulley should be between the 1 line on the bottom pulley which all should line up with the t on the flywheel. you may have found your problem
maybe they tried to line up the arrows rather than the lines

Yeah it is possible that someone messed up one side. Probably side which had broken belt. Also about markings difference I would say you got half breed between newer and older 16v engine.

the triangle marks are the position that the tentioners should be set.
Quote:
To complete Andrew's explanation, leave tensioner as it is and turn anti-clockwise until triangles on pulleys are aligned. THEN release tensioner by unscrewing the nut and screw it again in this new position. Continue to turn engine anti-clockwise to check if the "bottom one mark" is aligned between the "upper 2 marks". If they are not, reprocess everything until you get marks PERFECTLY aligned.

It is very important to place both pulleys aligned with triangles and NOT the "one" and two marks" to release the tensioner. They can't be aligned together left and right side. you have to turn the engine to align one side and turn again to align the other side. They will not be aligned with T mark on flywheel, instead a V mark will appear on the flywheel. Once again do not try to align with triangle. Always use the 1 and 2 marks.

If both banks should be done, it's best to start with left (real when sit in the car) than right.

That was from another post
