Hi,
Well i finally dropped the engine yesterday for a gearbox swap, after loosing the whole weekend to bad weather.
It's back in but have still to reconnect everything. Next free day is Sunday so hope it's not snowing again, and that i've stopped aching.
Also hope the replacement box is better than the original!

Isn't it easier with the bonnet off? _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Try this when you put it back in next time or reverse it for taking it out. Sit engine and box on jack.
Make sure jack saddle is positioned at front of gearbox next to flywheel.
Start jacking when main engine mounting is roughly lined up.
Tail will raise first and as soon as its lined up with body fit rear mounting and bolt in place.
Just keep jacking now and engine will rise into place and only need minor jiggling to line up and put main engine bolt through.
I've found this way turns a multi jack, multi person job into a one man operation.
It would be easier with bonnet off though.
My record using this technique from driving car onto ramps to putting box in boot and off for a rebuild is just over 2hrs (I was on a bit of mission that day).

Yes.
You have to remove the bonnet to get the rad out. I had to refit the bonnet as the car's outside.
RSFruitbat - I take off crosmember and front arms, drop the whole front end so that engine sits on trolley, take out top bolt, lift the body (high) pull out engine and box. Body is then dropped back onto engine/box after. With a scissor jack on gbox tail lining up the top mount was no problem.
all done solo except for getting the Mrs to help take off/ refit bonnet.

I ended up taking my engine out the top to avoid the dismantling of the cross member but hey, whichever way you look at it it's a bit of an arse of a job. Glad it's gone well so far John and I hope that new box is a goodun after all that work!! |

Thanks Lee.
Not a bad idea at all to come out the top if you have a crane, and probably what the pros would do.
This is the 3rd time i've had it out, and this time the crossmember was actually easy to refit. I have still to rejoin the front suspension arms to the trailing arms and that is always a complete cowson.
The 'new' box is supposed to be 'excellent' but of course is a gamble. I'll have to pretend it's great whatever happens else the Mrs might get the scrappy 'round when i'm out.
Hopefully all done for SAD

I very nearly got you to do it afor, as your estimate was good, but work's eased off, so a little more time free and a little less money available = brass monkeys on the drive.
I can see all the resasons to pull the box off the back with the lump in situe, but lack of lift/pit and if i'm honest, muscle power, put me off.
Cheers,

Have you tried putting the trailing arms into the x member first?
If the front wheel are on ramps it tends to hold all the geometry in place so you can just jack / lift it into position and get the bolts in and to start.
This is one of the reasons I jack the engine and not the body.
Ultimately its whatever you are comfortable doing.
I only ever tried fetching the engine and box out throught the top once and it was that much aggrivation and caused that much damage it just wasnt worth it.
Had the same experience with changing gearboxes with engine in. More aggro than it was worth and if you can do it on your own then you must be related to Arnie.
