Oops.... just starting to think about putting some things back together and I've noticed a sensor I didn't disconnect on the old engine.
i.e. I have no idea what it is, or where the connector is for it!
Anyonw have any ideas??? It's part 5 on this photo, at the back of the engine :
Thanks!

I'm starting to think this is the temperature warning light indicator on the dash.
Anyone confirm this?

Hmmm.... that's interesting - as I can't remember for the life of me removing a connector from there when I removed the old engine.

Can't be totally positive but I think I remember someone saying it was the temp warning light. Mine has got one with a wire attached. |

Lee,
Can you describe the wire going to it, and from where it originates, is it off the loom going to the injectors on that side?
I'm in the process of (slowly) getting mine back together, and like Bobbber can't remember disconnecting anything off the back of the head.
Cheers,

Yeah, temp warning light sensor, wire comes from loom near wires for oil pressure sensor and starter motor. Can't remember whether it's brown or black and white. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

Hi,
Yes this is the maximun coolant temp sensor for the dashboard. It drives the red bulb indicating that the engine has overheated.
In my motor, its an orange wire connected to the sensor.

I think the topic of that sensor has come up before, because I seem to remember asking why on earth the overheat light needed its own sensor instead of being driven from the same one as the temperature gauge! _________________ "Now, all that is left to do ... is wait that something else brokens, to fix up again!" |

Hi,
Found it.
Sorry for duff info Bobbber, mine must have been disconnected for 6 years since the lump last came out
It's a thin orange wire inside a thin black sleeve that comes out of the harness (inside concertina tubing) that feeds starter (as Paul said) then comes round head to feed nsf lights. The orange wire could only reach the sensor on the back of ns head.

If that one is for overheating then what are each of the ones in each throttle body for ? I assume one is for water temp but that still leaves one.

Thankyou Gritsop. I can now sleep easy at night. Mystery solved.
Now how do I go about refitting all these sensors and wires

Ade,
I have some wiring diagrams which have all the sensors listed (as long as you know what they are first)... and the corresponding wire colours. Although it's in French.
Maybe I'll translate them and put a copy on the web.

The English equivalents are part of the wiring diagrams manual (all 380 pages of it)
All the best

Hi,
just to make things clear in the little forest of sensors, there is one sensor for the fuel injection ECU, dipped in the coolant, another, dipped in the coolant too, for the needle temp gauge on the dash.
The third sensor is for overtemp warning light and is bolted to one of the heads because it will continue to operate even if there is a coolant loss and the engine is running dry. In that case the temperature needle goes down but luckily the overtemp light will warn you.
regards,
zp |
