Not a subject many of you will have experience with....

I'm currently overhauling my 4x4 sud which has a P4 rear axle. I've noticed the N/S hub is leaking oil.

I went to alfa in Portsmouth today and the service guy looked very puzzled when I tried to discuss it with him! So... questions...

1 - Is the seal integral to the bearing? On the alfa service thingy I couldn't find an oil seal, only a bearing.

2 - can anyone on here supply this bearing / seal, and is so how much?

3 - How do I fit it? There is a large 'nut' on the back of the assembly, with cut-outs in it. Looks like it would take a C spanner. Alfa said they dont have a tool for it and wont work on anything older than a 156 now...!!! So.. how do I get it undone? Hammer and chisel? Confused

I will post a photo later...

N/S = Near side. Side nearest the curb in the UK. Hub = bit that the wheel bearing lives in.

All the best

Ah ok.
Since you taken it apart you allready know answer to yours questions.

1. No seal is not on bearing it is in that tube, thats why ou couldn't find it on parts thingy.
It can be removed and installed back in few seconds easily by hand.

2. I got my seals few years back from AR dealership.
Bearing can be bought separetly from SKF it is somewhat common bearing in FIATs so should be readily available. Sorry don't know dimensions nor SKF part number but once you take it of axle and measure it you should be able to find it.
Now tricky part is removing it, there is nut that needs to be unscrewed carefully or you'll need to buy that also and washer that was hot mounted on axle so you need to heat it again to remove it from axle.

hmmm....

The bearing is fine, is just there is evidence of some oil leakage outside. The axle has only done about 60K miles.

So there is a seal in the axle tube itself?
So what lubes the wheel bearing?

That nut is nearly 50 quid! I wonder if they are the same on a 4x4 estate (drum brake) axle.. I have one of those in the workshop tool. I know the bearings are different sizes and the P4 disc-brake hubs dont fit on the estate 4x4 axle tubes. Anyway... I digress....

This would be a bit easier if the parts manager at alfa even pretended to give a $hit! He didn't even seem to want to look up parts for me!

Ok I'm glad to hear bearing is fine.

Yes. Seal should be at finger reach inside axel tube.
Nothing If I remember corectly it is closed type bearing with grease inside.

Link
This should be SEAL no 4, AR code 60568371
but it is pictured strange it should be in position and look like no10.

NO price is on other place click on item number and price appears
price
Pieces that were not available for order at time when catalogue is made are with little pics in first column.
Catalogue is rather old 24/01/2005 so you don't know if it is still available
Call your local AR dealer and ask for price/availability of that part number.
