just changed the rear wheel bearings on my 17ie, and would like to know if they are tightend up to a specific torque (like a ford fiesta for instance) or left with a bit of play like a more traditional tapper roller Question before i pean them over.

Cheers

I just looked at the manual and found the correct way to do nut.

Tighten to 25 - 29Nm while rotating drum 4 or 5 turns in each direction, partially slacken nut and strike stub shaft with a mallet, then hand tighten to specified torque.
Then goes on about checking end float, which i dont have and peening over nut when done.

I've done it the wrong way once or twice - tightened the nut until there was no play and left it at that. I think once everything settles down properly, play appears and I fail scrutineering at the next track day. Wink Hence the approved way of tightening it and giving it a bash to settle things, THEN re-tightening and fixing in place.

Hi

If you over tighten them (ie, tighten them up to the specified torque but not release them) then expect the wheel bearings to be metal paste after a while.

All the best
