|
|
Hi
I´m replacing the head gaskets of my wife´s 33 1.5 (1991 – Carbs)
As everything is disassembled, I noticed one of the Power Steering Rack´s dust covers (I dont know de right name – Big rubber that moves) is opened.
So I have to replace it...
I have a spare rack at home, and it looks it is in very good condition.
So, my question is, if I replace the steering rack, is there any special care?
What do I need to do?
Replace the rack and put some more oil?
Any special procedure?
Thanks

Hi
With the engine out it is not too bad to change the rack. Connecting the new rack up to the steering column can be a horrible job.
Only things to watch out for is to use new copper washer sealing the pipes to the rack, and once you add the fluid start the engine and turn the wheel from one lock to the other a few times.
All the best

The engine is in the car, but it is a 1.5.
Tomorrow I will take out the heads.
With the heads out, is it dificult?
Why do you say that it can be a horrible job?
Is it the space available to work?
Thanks
Regards

Just because it means lying upside down with your head in the footwell. Plus you need to move the rack into position onto the column, so you need one person putting the rack in place, while you give it onto the column
All the best
