Anyone got a right side one of these ?

It does the self adjusting by rotating the adjuster, when I changed my wheel bearing the other day, I guess I knocked it off because it was there last time I did my brakes.

I would imagine that it's not in his interest to make the effort to sell that small piece of an adjuster, thus making the adjuster unsellable unless he charges an unreasonable price??

Hey Paul, according to Alex he had the little pieces by themself.
I have been hunting high and low for these, it has been suggested that they may be used on a clio mk1 or 2, I have looked at peugeots, no joy, still looking.
It is a generic part for cars, but what cars Sad

?

I am sure Alfa Romeo did not make this part and it is made by a brake manufacturer.
It must have been used in other make and models of cars.

Can you guys add to brake manufactureres to help me find the part

I think Alfa only used bendix and ate on the 33.

Other makes include: lucas,apec, ebc, ferrodo,mintex,powertrain,delphi... but i think these are mainly pattern pads and shoes etc.

The adjusters complete on ebay i mentioned above look very familiar from memory, but I haven't had my drums off for a while.

The tech drawings of the ones you show look to be different on the right where the spring would locate, its on the left in my pic and the spring would not hold on Sad

Look correct to me Al' They must be handed, but I can't see the difference- not saying i'm correct, but when i rotate those diags in my minds eye they seem ok.

Look at the pic I just posted, the bottom left spring hooks into the adjuster, they are sided btw Smile

and a local garage has the bit I need, but the other side!! Sad

Now look at the tech drawings, although its for the other side, the place where that spring would locate to is just a c shape, not a j shape Sad

Surely it's just a hole where the spring would fit instead of a slot.
I assume/hope you get two adjusters in the kit for £49 Exclamation

So, they should be fine except the price.

Next time I'm at the factors i might ask if they can get these at a more reasonable price. Last time I had the drums off, I lubed the adjusters etc, but I don't think they'ver ever self adjusted, and the teeth are getting worn from screwdriver assisted adjustment.

I spoke to a very Helpfull guy called Ray @ LCS Louth on 01507 602366 from that ebay site.
He did a search and has come up with 2 part numbers and prices
431053 pug 405 bendix £99inc
431073 pug 406 bendix £47inc

I Emailed him the pic of it on the car and gave him some measurements, 11.75CM tip to tip, not including the spring and his come in at 12CM

I hope that is of some help to someone.

In my experience, these adjusters only actually auto-adjust in theory! Last year I discovered that both my Alfa 33 racers had adjusters with one of the stupid little clippy bits missing. This seemed to account for the large shoe to drum clearances so I made great efforts to get hold of these silly items - with John at Justsuds being helpful. However, I wished I hadn't bothered because after fitting them very carefully(the right way round!) I came to conclusion that they simply don't work!I spent a considerable time trying to get the bloody things to work - via both foot and handbrake methods, but had no luck. I then read a few articles on the subject and found that I wasn't alone and that the only way you can set a reasonable close clearance is by spinning the adjuster wheel with screwdriver until you can only just get the drum on. Obviously,this means doing this tedious practice every time you want to adjust the shoes. Part of the joys of Alfa ownership!

Hi Richard,
You can adjust them up with the drums on.
Every year before my mot I normally take off the drums, sand off the lip, I now scrape it iff with a screwdriver, and adjust the self adjuster, I now do it with the drum on and adjust the handbrake afterwards.
Last mot I mentioned to the mot guy my procedure and he said not to worry, after he did the brake test, the brakes were like I just adjusted them. I think the machine that he used made the adjusters work.
I wanted to get the little bit because I have heard that they can work loose without them, so the worst case I know that they will not undo and stay put.

How do you get them to adjust? With them in my hand you can see them work, by pulling the shoes apart at the top.
Paul H and I spent time getting the bits together to get mine to work and we noted that one had a metal part missing that pushed on the spring loaded shiny metal that acted on the little bit that I was missing. Another had the star bit on the wrong way round and the other had the threaded part from the wrong side so it went the wrong way.

Interesting! However, surely the whole point of auto-adjusters is that you shouldn't need to adjust them! I did all the stuff you described about making them work in your hand - after making sure that all parts were present and correct, and fitted in the right orientation, etc - but on the car, with the drums on, the damn things were pretty useless. Some years back, I had an S2 33 racer and if I remember rightly, that had holes in the drums (or backplate?) which allowed you to manually spin the ratchets with the drums in place. Some comic in the Alfa design department must have considered these to be superfluous for the S3.
Over the past few years, I have bought several defunct S3 cars for spares/engines etc and invariably the rear brake adjusters have been either incomplete or incorrectly fitted and clearly not working.
Fortunately, the rear bakes do very little work on the racer (which has a driver adjustable brake bias valve) so I live with my occasional manual adjust method.

Do you have a stub axle Richard?

In the manual it says to adjust the rear brake bias valve by hanging a 12 of 16kg weight on the hook and undoing the nut and redoing it up.
What weight should I use on my lowered road car, I have no driver adjustable brake bias valve.
The brakes are loverly straight after adjusting them up but because the car is lowered the rears get used more than they should and they soon get more pedal travel.
