G'day.

I've just put my oct '94 33 1.3i.e. through the CT(MOT here in France).

It failed on front flexible brake hoses, a duff headlight(not big problems) but I also need a new cat and lambda as it's chucking out far too much CO. Not a major surprise as both items were cheapo aftermarket products which have got me through six years.

Cats here are silly money and I'm looking to buy in the UK. In particular http://www.rockauto.co.uk/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=2729210&cc=923301

and will put a new rear silencer on as well.

Anyone here have any experience with 33 cats and this make of cat? Or where I can get a good quality one without having to take out a personal loan.

Cheers Very Happy

For info this repair pipe is available for less than £25 on ebay.co.uk - item 400404872252

I have found a cheaper site here that has them for about €50 - about the same with delivery taken into account. They also have some decent cats(eg Walker) for "only" €340 http://www.viawebpiecesauto.fr/m2/d295/c102/s10/g429/a100004/alfa-romeo-33-907a-1990-01-1994-09-14-ie-907a3a-907a3b-90cv-essence-1991-06-jusqua-aujourdhui-echappement-catalyseur.html

Also an NGK lambda sensor for this model can be had at reasonable cost at http://www.sparkplugs2u.com/search.aspx?q=1921

There's no mention of diameter of pipe. Are you sure it's the correct size?

Had a look through the shop, some good stuff there. Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure it's the right size. That pipe bit seems to rust very quickly (as if it's acting like a sacrificial anode) as the converter box itself is stainless. They should have made it all stainless I suppose. I would have to get someone to weld it on.

Original cat was removed in 2007 at 55,000 miles. When I shake it it doesn't rattle so I think it might still have some life in it.

Would it not be better to have that pipe made in stainless? I had mine made locally for not much money ( was about 6 years ago though) and then welded it up myself. I also used a universal cat which was about £50 and removed the center silencer.

I suppose it boils down to how long you think the car will last an how much money you want to throw at it.

I'm going to put it through again after running it for a good few hours at high revs. The line isn't in poor condition. No leaks. I'm hoping a good blast will clear it out.

If that doesn't work I'll have to look at it again.

You could try one of the cat cleaning products too.

My wifes pug 308 failed it's MOT at just 4 years with horrendous emmissions. It had only really been used for school runs the year before.

I put 'cataclean'- (i think) into the tank, ran the car for a week, then thrashed it on MOT retest day and the emmissions were fine.

This any good? Not sure on fitment though ie diameter of pipe for a 1.3? Think all the 1.5/ 1.7's were 43mm?

The cat that's on the car at the moment is a similar cheapo one like that. It was a pita to fit - about an inch or three shorter that it should have been for the Walker rear silencer. I had to improvise by adding a bit of pipe on the join which is still holding. I don't really want to go through that again. It would nice if the cat lasts at least as long as the silencer.

Yes all 8v pipes are that diametre.

Changed front flexible brake hoses and clutch slave yesterday.

Took it for a blast this evening. It runs great so I'm still hoping it will pass after I've given it some decent runs and when it's good and hot. If not I'll just have to bite the bullet. I haven't decided what to do but t would be nice to have a Walker cat and silencer and an NGK sensor. That's about €500 though .
