Does anyone know the service interval for changing timing belts based on time?
I know it is 80,000 km, (50,000 miles) but I have only done 19,000 km (about 12,000 miles) since I changed them and the tensioners in March 2010. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. Hi RFlower,
I founded no time interval indication on the service and work manual for 33.
For timing belts in general, non specific for alfa 33, in general it is said 5 years.
I think it is a quite conservative indication for a few kms belt, to be safe almost 100%,
in practice I do not respect that interval if visual inspection of the belt is ok
(but with alfa 33 visual inspection is not easy, so it is not a good argument here)
What I know is that adverse conditions for timing belt,
and so indication for short replacement intervals, are oil on the belt,
water or other problems in the tensioner belt bearing,
and if the car remains stopped for very long time (one or more year?),
with the belt always curved and stretched in the same position. _________________ Alfa 33 |

I've just bought a Gates timing kit today. (need to get it shipped now from UK to Uruguay!!)
Something is squeaking when cold (grinding bearing sound).
either the water pump or tensioner.
disappears when warmed up but something is failing.
So to be on the safe side I'm replacing the lot.
I've had the car 5 years and never changed them (belts changed twice but never tensioners - non available locally). water pump maybe original with 145K kms no idea so trying to pick one up.
Hurting my wallet but will be peace of mind. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

4 years was the interval.
Pulleys less of a problem on 8v cars, but still a good idea to replace sometimes.
Just done water pump, with engine out. Easy if you know how. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV
