Having done 300 miles today with the green SW and new big ends, the prognosis is not good. On the way to LEGOLAND, I thought there was a slight rattle below 3000, so decided to give it a bit more load on the way back. Sure enough, big end rattle is still there.

Crank polished up OK as it was discoloured but not really marked, so the journal or the conrod or both might be oval.

I don't really fancy rebuilding it and am out of time now the school holidays are over, so the car is going in the barn until easter and the winter Freelander is out a month early.

If anyone knows of a good 16v engine for sale, I would be interested.

Sorry to hear that wombat. Was worth a shot though.
How much is it to get a crank reground there? Worth the effort?

Not investigated yet, but wont have time now until Easter to pull the engine to bits.

I have 2 with damaged heads from cambelt issues that I might drop the heads off to see if they are easily salvagable, but its a risk again without pulling the engine to bits. I dont want to put the effort into an engine swap again and find something wrong with it.

So, either a complete working engine, or a full rebuild next year I reckon.

Need to work out where to get some full gasket sets as well.
