So, I bought some new rear shocks because one of the old ones is leaking, it looks like you have to take the springs out to replace the shocks or am I missing something?
After narrowly avoiding a serious eye injury when changing Multipla springs, I don't want to take them out if I don't have to!
Cheers,
Kev.

No need to compress springs on rear. Undo top mount on strut and jack the car up while letting the axle hang (spring should now be loose), undo bottom nut to strut and remove spring and strut together.

You'll need to disconnect the brake pipes to get enough slack for lowering the rear axle - some bleeding required after the job is completed!

zp

I did the job without disconnecting brake lines, but it would be easier doing so as ZP says.

If you can, avoid touching the pipes and having to bleed them as the rear compensator can get air in it and be a PITA to bleed Smile

Thanks Al, I hate bleeding brakes so I was hoping to get away without disturbing the pipes Very Happy

Just make sure when you 'drop' the axle you don't put any strain on the flexi pipes.

I did the rear shocks on the green SW a few weeks back. No problem with the flexis. Did one side at a time so easy to manage not straining them

Job done Smile did one side at a time lowering the axle, not a bad job to especially as all the nuts came undone easily Smile Shame the jacking point went crunch when I tried to do the near side though!!

If only! Hoping my local garage can do it, the jobs are mounting up faster than I can tackle them! (and I haven't got a welder or the skills)

Hi Johnboy, Im in Maidstone, couldn't be much further away and still be in kent lol. I made the mistake of buying a gasless mig years ago, Ive used it in the past, but its way too fierce for car bodywork. Im toying with the idea of getting a new conventional one, especially as Ive got the spare wheel well to do as well. Hopefully top spares dude Alex is getting me a replacement well Smile

I have been considering advertising the car on here because I can't see me having the time to get on top of the job list, but Im not giving up just yet!

Regards,
Kev.

Hi KEV

Maidstone ah had some top nights out there, girls very friendly Wink
As for the spare wheel well you could always chop it out and put a plate over it! That's what I will be doing when I ever start my resto Rolling Eyes but mine will be alloy riveted in for a bit of weight saving Wink
Get yourself a welder and get playing Cool

I'm not a long way from chopping out the spare wheel well in my car. I am again going to do what I did before in the track car, is cut the wheel well out and replace with a riveted aluminium floor. Trying to save weight and make space again. Much as johnboy was describing.

You would be welcome to the wheel well if you wanted it, assuming Alex doesn't find you one in the meantime.

E.
