As always on automotive forums the question of tyres once again arises... Smile

My current set of Yokohama S760s are getting a little low, and I was considering a change. The 175/70R14 size works well for me, the 4x4 has plenty of grip off the line with the 175s and wider are reportedly heavier through the turns.
The S760s are nice and sticky, but a bit prone to feathering, especially on a 33.
The local tire place is recommending Bridgestones (I assume B70s as that was what was available when I got the S760s, but I didn't ask).
Does anyone have any recommendations in the 175/70R14 size, I've found it's not very common.

And on the subject of tyre widths, why does the paperwork on my german spec 33 state the front tyres should be 185 wide, whereas the rear tyres should be 175 wide?

Is it a summer/winter thing or is it to ensure that the rear of the car loses grip first?

Hi Adam
Never found a problem with the same size both ends. Tyre pressures can fine tune the balance to suit individual taste. The 33 in my experience is one of very few FWD cars that doesn't understeer badly when applying more power and is more neutral tending to a slight oversteer on really tight corners. Had an interesting moment last weekend when chasing a group of bikies over a very Alfa road,had to play catchup as they could weave through the traffic and get the jump on me. Anyway the point is I came round a blind corner at considerable knots to find that they were going alot slower and discovered the Alfa rear lockup the hard way. Opposite lock training from my rally days and the 33s superb balance saved the day but I hate to think what effect smaller tyres on the rear would have had.The rearmost bikie was pretty white when I went past.

I was also considering replacing all four tyres. (165/70R13 on steel rims).
Many opinions I have heard about brands. The fact is that I dont want to spend more that 200 - 220 €.
The suggestion is that i should buy the michelin energy tyres because they have very good quality, grip on the road.
Another suggestion is to buy bridgestone.
Pesonally i would like to buy the pirelly p2500 as the car this brand installed from the factory.
What is your opinion?

I have bridgstone evo B330 175/70 - 13' for last 5000km and I'm very satisfied, I drive my 33' agressively and as I can feel I have great grip on dry and excelent on wet road..
140-150kmph at wet road(heavy rain) and the grip was excelent. No slips or loose of power..
They are bit noisy at high speeds at dry, but since my exhaust is mush noisier( no cat, K&N intake, lowered springs) I have no complains.
I' would recomend them to everybody..
I've paid 60 Euro per tyre.

Hi

Just fitted Goodyear Venturas to the front of my 33 SW - but 14" rather than 13's as everyone else talking about.

40 quid inc valves, balancing etc

And they seem pretty good so far (1000 miles - I do 600 miles a week commute so miles rack pretty quick, and so far reliable ones [except for the water pump which packed up after two weeks off on hols!! = fairly typical behaviour as I understand]).

Anyway... tyres = Good grip, quiet, good in the wet etc.
