Hi guys need some help with a few things, the car is an Alfa 33 1986 1.5L twin carby.
1. The engine has been set at TDC, but im not sure what to set the dizzy cap to do i point the rotor at number 1 on the dizzy cap?
2. I know the firing order is 1-3-2-4, I have attached a picture of how i think the dizzy should be set, leads and numbers on the cap could someone please correct or confirm?
3. On the Passenger side of the car that carby does the fuel line from the fuel pump go to the top fitting on the carby or the bottom one??

From memory, at TDC if you look at the rim of the dizzy you will find a notch and this is where the rotor arm should be pointing to. This is no 1. This should get the car running and then you would adjust the timing to suit using a strobe.
I have always put the petrol feed in pipe on the bottom based on the idea if it fills from the bottom up it should force any air out. If you look at the 1 and 3 carb one of tose outlets is a smaller size. This should be the outfeed back to the tank and you can work it out from this.
I apologise if all this is rubbish.

Hi there rsfruitbat, thanks i found the notch on the dizzy, and i seem to have the leads setup correctly i think, but where is TDC on the flywheel is it where the "T" make is or the circular hole?? _________________ -=alferr=-

There's a straight line on the wheel which may have some paint on it to show it up. You can remove the cam cover on the right bank to make sure both valves are closed on the No 1 cylinder. The dizzy rotor should be pointing to the No 1 cable. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Ok im totally confused can someone help me out, i have set the flywheel to the "T" mark now i went to put the dizzy in and the key only fits in so that the rotor is facing like in the pic, towards my number 4 lead?? I have attached some more pics please have a look, at TDC the "T" mark the rotor wont face any other way unless i have the leads up the creek??

Have you taken the rotor arm off the dizzy? I replaced the rotor arm on mine not so long ago. Is it possible to put it on the wrong way? I can't remember now.. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Hi there, yes but the rotor arm has a key a circle and square so it can only fit one way which points it like this.... _________________ -=alferr=-

Hi
That is (I think) a Marelli ignition system so I am not familiar with it.
However the dizzy should only fit in one way.
How far apart has the engine been? My guess would be that the oil pump / dizzy drive shaft has not been timed correctly to the crank.

Ok, well im not that familiar with boxer flat 4's this engine has had a full rebuilt, all new pistons etc but a proffessional workshop so i assume it has all been done properly!
Did you guys manage to look at the picture i posted of the dizzy?? Is the rotor pointing the right way or not?? Yes it is Marelli and has dual pickups. _________________ -=alferr=-

Hi
The arm looks to be pointing about 90 degrees out.
Take a plug out and check that you really are at TDC (just really to double check).
The distributor is driven from a shaft that is driven by the crank by some gears. The rotor arms position is pretty much fixed in relation to the crank as the shaft of the distributor can only locate on way on the shaft in the engine (except possibly on VERY early flat 4 engines). However I think that if the shaft to drive the distributor is not positioned correctly in relation to the crank then it will throw the rotor arm out of position.

Did you take the cam cover off and check the valve timing on no.1 cylinder?
The 2 exhaust valves are the outer ones and obviously the inner ones are the admission valves.
And yes cranking the engine is a lot easier with the plugs removed! _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Ok found the problem, the person who built the engine put that dizzy drive the wrong way around as when the "T" Is at TDC the rotor is pointing the wrong way, can someone help here, can i just swap the leads around???
How do i know i put the dizzy in another engine i have and it points the way it should at TDC!
If i can just swap leads around which one goes where??
Just added some pics, at TDC when flywheel is at "T" mark number 1 cylinder has both valves closed see picture i added in.

Well guess wat , i just changed the leads over so number 1 was where rotor was pointing and so all in firing order 1-3-2-4 clockwise and she started first go .
Thanks guys free alfa parts to anyone who wants them let me know what u need .
