yep can be easily done, only trick is to remove upper mount before attempting gearbox withdrawal.

Hi,

I'm going to swap my gearbox in the new year (well in 2008 sometime probably), and have already began worrying about it. I'll be limited for time so have been toying with the idea of just taking the gearbox off in situe.

ZPs link is really good, and i may consider it.

However alferr, if you have to do the job solo, and have a bit of time to do it in, i'd seriously consider removing the engine and box together. Having split alfa boxer engine/boxes off the car many times, i too would be very worried about alignment difficulty lying under the car with a very heavy gearbox.

With the lump out you also have the opportunity to do cambelts, water pump, plugs, and slave cylinder with ease, oh and clean up all the engine bay.

John

You really need to put the car on a lifting ramp or at least over a decent inspection pit and have a helping hand to remove the box on its own. It can be done but removing the engine/gearbox together may be safer.

Just pulled the whole lot out the bottom, as the alignment was gonna be a pain if i just took the gearbox out, also you tend to bend studs, putting new clutch in then back in the lot goes as one complete unit, yes took me half a day but was worth it in the end as i can just put everything together and yes it is also hard putting the subframe bolts back in and getting them to line up :S.

I removed the gearbox a lot of times out and put it back in on my own. It's not easy but it can be done.
This is from my thread on Slovenian forum about changing the clutch and stuff...

Remove exhaust manifold

Undo axles

Slightly untighten two bolts of front engine mounting

Dismounting of rear mount

Remove intake manifold

Upper mounting

Little help with hidraulic lift

Then slightly lower the engine and gearbox, to get the upper mounting out

Undo the little metal protection of the flywheel (3 m6 bolts)
Undo all the bolts that hold the gearbox

Then some hard work and the gearbox is out

Blocking the flywheel with stron screwdriver to undo the clutch bolts

Carbon clutch
To center the clutch i use an aksle of some broken gearbox

Homemade shortshifter

Beter fixing of the shifting rod

For more accurate gearshifting i have made new iron part (my poor english...) with absolutely no air so there is no empty movement of gear stick

Mounting goes in opposite order...
Very Happy
