Hi!
Yesterday i replaced my thermostat on my series 33 1.3ie 33.
I had forgotten how good it was to have the heater working in those winter temperatures.
But since i got the car, i've been replacing the thermostat every two years (it is now my fourth one...) since it appears losing its efficiency over time and eventually gets stuck open.
This time I bought a genuine "Alfa Ricambi" spare part, i hope it'll last longer than two years.
What are the lifetimes of your thermostats?
regards,

In my car it lasted 11 years the original (1992 model),i installed a new one a few months back as the temp didnt rise more than 50C.The man at the repair shop told me that they hold for 5 to 6 years most of the times. |

Hi,
Mine lasted from the car's birth 4/1991 till fall 2001. Since then the new thermostat is 100% efficient especially when cold and snowy; in ten minutes time 80 degrees are reached.
For your information these thermostats always stuck open in order to avoid overheating the engine. They are equipped with a gas ampoule that over the years it losses it's efficiency till it remains open.

I think coolant makes a difference. Thermostat in 86 Sprint was stuck open when purchased in 90, coolant like canal water. Ditto for the 33 just purchased. Both had "fsh" - I wonder how many dealers actually change coolant when scheduled ?
Replacement in Sprint is still working fine.
I have been using VW / Audi blue coolant in all engines. Not cheap, but it's permanent, if you don't get a leak. Trouble is, they just stopped producing it, haven't tried the replacement yet. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. I've replaced the thermostat housing on two of our cars with the two piece item of earlier cars( sud I think) and with a very small amount of fettling fitted new thermostats of the correct type at a fraction of the cost of the whole unit. They both work excellently.
